Amsterdam events from the canals
Amsterdam is a city that celebrates on the water. Throughout the year, the canals come alive with festivals, cultural events, and seasonal celebrations that transform the waterways into stages, parade routes, and open-air galleries. Experiencing these events from a boat gives you the best possible vantage point — and often the only way to truly be part of the action.
The Amsterdam Light Festival is the city's premier winter event, running from late November through mid-January. International artists create spectacular light installations along the canals, turning the waterways into an illuminated art trail. Our ALF Canal Cruise and ALF Open Boat follow the official festival route, ensuring you see every installation. The heated canal cruise boat keeps you warm while you take in the glowing artworks reflected in the dark water. The open boat brings you closer to the installations for an intimate, immersive experience — blankets and hot chocolate included.
King's Day on 27 April is the Netherlands' biggest national celebration, and Amsterdam's canals are the epicentre. The entire city turns orange, and hundreds of boats fill the canals for the biggest water-based party in Europe. Our private open boats let you navigate the festivities with your own group, while the event boat offers a shared celebration with DJ, drinks, and dancing on the water. King's Day boats sell out months in advance — early reservation is essential.
World Pride comes to Amsterdam in August 2026, bringing two weeks of celebrations, cultural events, and the world-famous Canal Parade. The Canal Parade sees decorated boats representing organisations and communities from around the world cruising through the canal ring, watched by hundreds of thousands from the bridges and canal sides. Our boats give you a front-row seat right on the water.
SAIL Amsterdam is one of the largest maritime events in the world, held once every five years. When the tall ships sail into the IJ harbour, the spectacle is best witnessed from the water. Our cruise boats position you among the historic vessels for an unforgettable experience.
The Amsterdam Dance Event in October transforms the city into the global capital of electronic music, and the canals are part of the action. Boat parties with live DJ sets turn the waterways into floating dance floors, combining Amsterdam's electronic music culture with its canal heritage.
Whether you are drawn to the artistic installations of the Light Festival, the festive energy of King's Day, the inclusive celebration of World Pride, or the musical pulse of ADE, Amsterdam's events are best experienced from the water.
